To my clients or clients-to-be:
My motto is “adapting to your needs” —- This means I will do whatever is necessary, within reason, to keep YOU, my client, comfortable, safe, and happy in your space.
Some of my duties and the services I pledge to provide to you are:
- Confidentiality and full compliance with HIPAA
- Consistency and familiarity
- Respect and timeliness
- Safety
- ADLs — daily hygienic needs like bathing/shower, toileting, changing, nail filing, dental care—whether you can walk to the bathroom or be wheel chaired in, or if you need everything done by the bedside.
- Nutrition/Food:
– Cook according to your dietary needs and specifications. Will do the grocery shopping as needed.
– If tube feeding is needed, that can be done too. - Coordinating all appointments — medical, podiatrist, pedicure, manicure, hair salon, social and short trips to the library/parks/beaches/mahjong
– Timely medicine reminders and keeping track of prescription refills. - Keeping a log of the vitals.
- Having quiet days at home watching favorite movies, reading books, doing arts and crafts, tending to plants, or just napping.
- Art therapy — in the form of music, or painting, or storytelling
- Exercises by creative gentle chair yoga or only regular PT and gentle walks. Coordinating water aerobics and group exercises that are held by various groups/organizations.
- Cleaning: I like to do the necessary cleaning to prevent falls, to prevent infections, and to prevent bacteria growing. Areas that my client uses are kept neat.
– Bathrooms and kitchens: after the use will be spiffed, wiped, and dried up.
– Laundry: Clothes and bedding will be changed and if washer/dryer is in the house, can be washed and put away. If laundry services are being used, then that will be coordinated. - Communicating with family and doctors.
As I always say and we all know, ‘no two days are the same.’ Sometimes we need to pivot quickly and I and my team are ready to do that. I bring art therapy to my clients — and my firm belief is ‘art can consist of any medium.’ Whatever I do, I always keep the safety of my client as my priority.
I also provide hospice care— which is slightly different from regular care. I can provide full 24hour coverage. I am very mindful of the delicate situation that families are in during this time. I ask the family members to let me take the burden of washing, cleaning, changing, medications during this time. I would like the family to enjoy these days with their loved one.
I coordinate all medications during hospice and all related calls with the triage nurse. I inform the nurse and keep the family completely updated of the status of my client.
Sometimes, I have also become the counselor for the family members. I quote the husband of one of my clients: ‘I never knew I needed to talk. Thank you so much for listening.’
